Press No. 21 San Diego State (12-1) led just 57-56 when Thames stepped
to the line and made a pair for a three-point lead. Frank Mason, who
along with Andrew Wiggins led No. 16 Kansas with 14 points, made 1-of-2
to make it a 59-57 game, then Thames hit two more from the line to help
secure the win.
It
was the first time a non-Big 12 school has won at Allen Fieldhouse
since Oral Roberts pulled a 78-71 shocker November 15, 2006. The teams
were meeting for the first time since a 79-66 Kansas victory in
December, 1979.
“To
come in here against a really good team and win is a wonderful victory
for our program,” San Diego State coach Steve Fisher told
goaztecs.cstv.com.
The
visiting Aztecs, who won their 11th consecutive game, held Kansas to
just 17 made field goals and 29 percent shooting from the field.
“I
thought we were sensational with our post-defense,” Fisher said. “When
(Kansas) got it down low I thought we did a good job of getting in to
the double team and when they threw it out we got out of it.”

No. 4 Wisconsin 75, No. 22 Iowa 71
A pair of technical fouls and an ejection for Iowa coach Fran McCaffery helped spark the Badgers at home.
Iowa
(12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) led 41-39 with 11:51 remaining in the second half
when McCaffery was hit with the technicals and tossed from the game. Ben
Brust, who finished with a team-high 19 points, went to the line and
made 4-of-5 technical free throws, then Nigel Hayes hit 1-of-2 from the
line and Wisconsin (15-0, 2-0) went up 44-41 and never trailed again.
The
Badgers, who rebounded from a 26 percent shooting percent in the first
half to make 12-of-23 shots in the final 20 minutes, equaled the best
start in school history, matching the 1911-1912 and 1913-1914 teams.
Iowa, which was trying to start 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 2002-2003, was led by Roy Marble’s 27 points.
No. 8 Wichita State 67, Northern Iowa 53
Fred
VanVleet scored a season-high 22 points and Cleanthony Early added 18
as the Shockers established a school record for consecutive victories to
begin a season.
Wichita State, which is 15-0 and 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference, topped the 1953-1954 team’s 14-0 start.
Nate
Buss had a dunk at the 7:23 mark that pulled the visiting Panthers
(7-7, 1-1) to within 53-44, but Early hit a jumper and VanFleet
converted a lay up, helping the Shockers maintain a double-digit for the
remainder of the game.
Deon Mitchell had 16 points to lead Northern Iowa, which dropped its sixth consecutive road game.
No. 20 Colorado 100, No. 10 Oregon 91
The host Buffaloes shot 56 percent from the field in handing Oregon its first loss.
Askia Booker had a career-high 27 points, 11 of which came in the final 4:40 of the game for Colorado (13-2).
Damyean
Dotson knocked down a 3-pointer to get Oregon within 80-75, then Booker
answered with a three-point play. The Ducks made it a five-point game
when Mike Moser hit a three, but again, Booker followed with a bucket to
put the Buffaloes up 85-78.
Spencer Dinwiddle added 23 points for Colorado, which had four in double figures. Moser led Oregon (13-1) with 24 points.
No. 11 Villanova 91, Providence 61
The host Wildcats shot a blistering 59 percent from the field and won for the seventh time by 20 or more points.
Villanova
(13-1, 2-0 Big East) came into the game making just 32 percent of its
three-point shots, but knocked down 14-of-26 Sunday, led by reserve
Dylan Ennis, who made 4-of-5 on his way to 17 points. JayVaughn Pinkston
missed only four of his 12 field goal attempts, all from two-point
range, and led the Wildcats with 19 points, while Darrun Hilliard (15
points) and Tony Chennault (10 points) each knocked down three from
behind the arc.
Providence (10-5, 0-2), which got 25 points from Bryce Cotton, trailed the entire way in dropping its third straight game.
Wake Forest 73, No. 19 North Carolina 67
Travis
McKie scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half and Wake Forest
snapped a four-game losing streak against the Tar Heels in the ACC
opener for both schools.
McKie
and the other four starters made 20-of-39 field goal attempts, part of a
48-percent shooting game for the hosts, who improved to 11-3 overall.
North
Carolina (10-4) got as close as 64-61 on J.P. Tokoto’s dunk with two
minutes to play. A minute later, McKie converted a three-point play to
make it a 67-61 game and Wake hung on.
James Michael McAdoo led the Tar Heels with 13 points.
